The recycling centre in Terrebonne
A technological showcase for recycling
The recycling centre in Terrebonne could soon become the first LEED building in the MRC des Moulins. The plant built in 2008 by Tricentris is meant to be a technological and environmental showcase, as well as a source of inspiration for other companies.
«Recycling is still more profitable than burial. It’s a collective environmental choice. By continuing to develop recycling habits among citizens, we will create a demand that will allow the industry to continue.» – Martin Lamoureux, director of communications at Tricentris |
Tricentris operates three recycling centres in Québec. The one in Terrebonne is in the process of receiving accreditation from the
Canada Green Building Council. Its promoters are aiming for Gold, the highest level of LEED certification. “We want to act as an exemplary corporate partner and serve as a showcase to encourage other enterprises motivated by environmental concerns to come to the region,” points out Martin Lamoureux, director of communications for the NPO.
The project, a structuring one for the region’s economy, received $40,000 in assistance from the Centre local de développement des Moulins (CLDEM) through its fonds d’économie sociale. Among the distinctive features of the building: a white roof on one part of the plant and a vegetation covered roof on the part over the offices. Geothermal boreholes provide the air conditioning.
Recycled materials were used as much as possible during construction. “We used crushed glass to stabilize certain pipes, because it costs to recycle glass,” reports Mr. Lamoureux. This green construction introduces new standards in recycling plant design. The next project for Tricentris, planned in Gatineau for 2011, will draw inspiration from the expertise developed in Terrebonne.
The plant cost 8 million dollars in total. It can treat 72,000 metric tonnes of recyclable waste per year. Close to half of these materials are sent to Asian markets. Despite the crisis that is hitting this sector of the industry, Tricentris remains confident.
